Having a debrief before we turn our sights on Adel.
Being ‘The Rotary Club of Headingley’ with members living in Ilkley, Otley, Bramhope, Adel , West Park and Headingley we discussed what we could do for our Communities. Eventually we came up with the idea of painting the milestones on the main road, A660, linking all areas. Bramhope Parish Council kindly offered to buy the paint and equipment so we started there. There are 6 milestones /guide stones within the parish boundary and these date back to the 1850’s and 1880’s when the turnpike road was built. The Yorkshire milestones are quite unique and are Grade 11 listed objects. The stone ones list local places but not many townships/villages eg churches, bridges, stations etc.

It is in the wall by the Scout hut and tunnel chimney.BeforeFinishedKeith posing for a resident, one of the many people stopping to chat. The 3rd one was at the Breary Lane crossroads and one of two opposite each otherSpot the milestone!BeforeStart of letteringFinishedOpposite the previous one was at the junction of Breary Lane and the A660 – note the spelling of Otley Schevin and we believe Kirskill Hall is Creskeld HallBeforeFinished side 1Roy showing us the other sideRoy really did get the short straw! Here is the milestone at the junction of Creskeld Lane and the A660. It has two sides. Side1 appertains to the main road and side 2 appertains to further down Creskeld Lane.BeforeNick building up courage to start this one!FinishedFinally half way along the A660 between the last roundabout in Bramhope and Golden Acre Park is the 6th milestone, another metal Turnpike one. It’s good to know we are a mile nearer London! The TeamHaving a debrief before we turn our sights on Adel.
